Answers:

The SPH or Sphere is the distance correction for your eyes. The minus before the numbers means that you need assistance for far away vision, that you are nearsighted.

Nearsightedness is when your eyes focus incorrectly on far away objects, meaning that they appear to be blurred. But the up close objects may appear to be clear. The medical term for nearsightedness is myopia.

The lowest sphere power is -.25. The powers run in quarters, just like you count money. So in your right eye you have about $1.50 worth of prescription, or RX, and in the left eye you have $.50 cents worth. So your left eye has less distance RX in it than your right eye.

The CYL means Cylinder. When ever you see CYL on a eyeglass prescription then it means that you have astigmatism.

Astigmatism is when the lens of the eye is not perfectly round or sherical - the lens of the eye helps to refreact light to focus on the retina. The retina is the area of the eye which is the that forwards sight information to the brain - and someone with astigmatism may see lights at night as they are spread out, instead of perferctly rounded. Some have said that it appears as if they are under water looking at objects. Astigmatism has been found to be present at birth.

The CYL or Cylinder of the prescription also runs in quarters, as does the SPH or Sphere. So you have $2.00 worth of correction in your Right eye, and you have $2.50 worth of correction in your left eye.

So as far as the CYL you have more Astigmatism in your left eye, than you do in your right eye.
