What could this be?!

Question:

What could this be?

My right eye has been red for the past 3 days and it's a little painful sometimes. There is no discharge, no bumps, no cuts, and no scratches. I could have gotten iirritated from my shampoo or face cleanser.

What do you think it could be? I can't see the school doctor until Monday. Do you think I should go see a pharmacist? I'm very worried and I don't have money to see a doctor. Help!

Answers:

There are several conditions that can manifest as a red eye (glaucoma, corneal abrasion, viral conjunctivitis, bacterial conjunctivitis, allergic conjunctivitis, uveitis ... etc, etc ). But the fact that there is no discharge narrows it down a bit.

Red eye is usually a form of inflammation, in which case, warm compress is not a good idea. Warm compresses will increase the blood flow to the area and thus increase the pain and inflammation.

The best thing you can do while waiting to see a doctor would be to place cold compress over your eye. Get a clean face towel, our clean ice water (do not use ice cubes) over it and place over the affected eye.

Pharmacists are not usually trained to treat eye problems and it isn't a good idea to put in home remedies, plant matter or any non-prescribed topical medication into your eye without seeing an eye doctor or a doctor,
