Disposable contact lenses? What determines the duration of usage?!

Question: What makes daily disposables only usable for one day?
Is it possible to continue using them? (I mean there must be some time window allowed right :O)

I got some daily disposable coloured lenses for prom and i was hoping to get as much use out of them as possible.

Oh, and one of my friends used her pair of monthly disposable lenses for 5 months because she didn't have enough cash to get more.

What do you think?

Thanks for all your help! :]

The lens material is thinner, and more permeable to oxygen and water than standard lenses. The increased permeablility to water means that it's easier for bacteria and fungi to set up housekeeping in the lens.

Wearing contacts too long can lead to blurry vision, a change in vision, swelling of the cornea or a bacterial infection. If a person has a bacterial infection and leaves it untreated, it can leave a scar. If a person's cornea is damaged too much from the scar, it's possible that they might have to have a corneal transplant.

You can generally tell when they are ready to be tossed. When i put in a fresh pair my eyes never dry out. When they are ready to go, i will notice cause they dry out during the day. I usually go two months to a pair.

All that happens is they get some sort of buildup on them, which eventually affects their performance. You can delay it with nightly soakings, but sooner or later they will be unusable.

I think they are all the same and they just want you to spend money! I wear night and day monthly and have gone about 3 months with a pair and went in for my eye exam, I told him i had been wearing the pair for a few weeks and he said everything was looking great for contacts that were a few weeks old, so apperantly they can be worn for much longer than they say. They probably just specify time so they cover their own butt and dont get sued when someone gets an infection or something. Just make sure they stay clean

Dont you know that science is involved to determine the time a disposable lens is to be worn? You are putting your eyes at great risk by overwearing them. You will be prone to more eye infections, corneal scarring just to name a couple- and dont think your eyes wont tell the Doctor when you go back. Do the right thing- it's not about the money- It's about the health of your eyes!

I know this may sound harsh, but real people tell you the truth!
