Your optician may be referring to your tear break-up time (TBUT) in regards to dry eyes. You may have a lower than average tear break-up time but if it does not bother you it's nothing to be concerned about.

If you want to increase your TBUT warm compresses are great for stimulating the meibomian oil glands in the eyelids. Also lid scrubs with saline and a q-tip work well but do not over do it or you will have chapped eyelids.

NEVER put water on your soft contact lenses. This can lead to major infections such as acanthomeba keratitis which may possibly lead to permanent vision loss.

It's not medicaly bad to have dry eyes. It can get uncomfortable, but it's very easy to drop in a couple of drops of water or normal saline (which you can buy very inexpensively over the counter).

Contact lenses can cause your eyes to dry out slightly. the newer ones are designed to reduce this. If you don't have any discomfort or redness of the eye - don't be concerned. Your optician is just picking up on the reduction in 'wetness'.

If you begin to get increased redness or veins showing, or any dryness / scratchy feeling in your eye, or your lens does not move freely in your eye - see your optician for lubricating eye drops or to make sure there is no infection.

PS do not use plain water to lubricate eyes or wash lenses - it is not 'slippery' enough and can make the dryness much worse - anyone who has left their lenses in water overnight when they've run out of solution will agree!
