One red eye?!

Question: One of my eyes is red in the white area to the right of my pupil. It's been this way for 4 or 5 days and didn't go away when I stopped wearing my contacts. It doesn't hurt or itch but it looks pretty bad. I didn't get hit in the face or anything recently so I don't think it's a hemorrhage. What could it be? What should I do?

I agree that this sounds like a subconjunctival hemorrhage, essentially a bruise on your eyeball. It may take up to 3 weeks to completely resolve, and may change colours from red to yellowish as it heals. Still, as a contact lens wearer it would be a good idea to have your optometrist take a quick look at it, as you are at a higher risk for eye infections than someone who does not wear lenses. ( If you say you have a red eye, they will get you in pretty quickly - better to be safe than sorry.) Try to remember if you have done any of the things mentioned by the other posters, including coughing, straining, heavy lifting, vomitting, etc. If a subconjunctival hemorrhage becomes a recurrent problem, you should consider seeing your doctor to check for blood disorders. :)

I wear contacts and had that once, and it went away after a while. THe next time I had an eye test they didnt say my eyes were any worse so I dunno. Probably just a bit of discomfort and will go away like mine did.

nothing serious. i think one of the blood vessels in ur eye just busted. usually caused by coughing real hard, laughing really hard, vomiting, & rubbing ur eye too hard. it will clear up in about a week

You broke one of the tiny veins in the surface of the eye. It could have been a lot of things - coughing, a scrape, sometimes you'll never know. It'll dissipate. I've had that a few times - once when I was a kid and I had whooping cough both of my eyes turned completely red, it took about two weeks for it to completely go away.
