Scleral buckle prognosis?!

Question: I was born 3 months early and got too much oxygen....it detached both my retinas. One was able to be partially saved with the scleral buckle. I had that surgery when I was a baby. I am 25 now. Can I expect my vision to be stable in the future, with having the scleral buckle performed when i was a baby?!?

This procedure would have been done, exactly as you described, to try to save the detachment of the retina. The long term prognosis, though little is known, but what I have found is that myopia can be expected (near sightedness) when the procedure is done, because of the use of the product used as "the buckle". At this point in life, most individuals, even without problems with vision at birth, can expect their vision problems to start leveling off. For example, many individuals with higher Myopic Prescriptions, typically see their prescriptions leveling off at about the age of 25 or so. This has been my experience.

I think the fact that they were able to save what they did with the Buckling Procedure is fabulous! Years ago, this would not have been the case!!

Good luck to you!
