Okay my dear - you not going to die - I promise, but those things can be really scary - yes!

You have what is called a "sub-conjunctival haemorrhage - a tiny blood vessel in the white of the eye has burst. Basically it is a bruise in your eye. You've had a vessel burst in your eye and just like under your skin it has bled out in the the surrounding tissue.

Although the effects of bleeding in the white of the eye are dramatic, it is entirely harmless and usually does not have any serious significance. If a bloodshot eye is painful, uncomfortable, or interfering with vision, then it is not a simple sub-conjunctival haemorrhage. It is traditional to check the blood pressure of people who have sub-conjunctival haemorrhages, but these burst blood vessels are not usually caused by raised blood pressure. If a red eye is painful, it potentially represents something more serious. Infections such as conjunctivitis can cause a bloodshot eye. And other conditions, such as iritis (an inflamed iris) and glaucoma (raised pressure within the eye), can also cause pain and redness.

If you are getting any unusual bleeding or bruising elsewhere in the body, together with sub-conjunctival haemorrhages, you need to have a blood test to make sure that your blood is capable of clotting properly. People who take aspirin occasionally find that they get sub- conjunctival haemorrhages because the aspirin interferes with the clotting mechanism.

More than likely you will see your entire eye become all red and yucky like that. However it is not life/vision threatening, but maybe a bit socially threatening because all kinds of people will look at you funny, but don't sweat it.

Causes can be a simple as sneezing too hard, but some people have gotten them upon impact, being hit with something and occassionally those who are bulemic and throw -up, the pressure in the face is usually what triggers this burst vessel.

Hope this helps oh and btw it takes a pretty long time to heal usually at least two weeks or so.

Good luck!

You popped a blood vessel in your conjunctiva. It's not serious, it should stop spreading soon, and it should go away in about a week.

I recommend consulting a doctor..
It seems to me that it's just like a sore eye.. But it's too red for what it looks like.
What happened?

It's a subconjunctival hemorrhage. Basically, the tiny capillaries in your eyes have burst due to some unknown cause. It can occur when sneezing, coughing, bending over, vomiting, or if you strain your eye. Because you're not feeling a thing, theres no need for alarm-as it's perfectly alright. Given two to three weeks, it should disappear.
