When they do lasik eye surgery, do they knock you out or do they keep you awake?!

Question: You are awake. The doctor will give you a valium before surgery to calm you, then when it is time for surgery, numbing drops will be put in the eye. All you will feel is a little pressure when they place the microkeratome on your eye.

awake

They keep you awake. All they gave me was a single Valium, to knock me out when I got home, so my eyes had a chance to rest.

your awake

lasik surgery is an out patient procedure meaning there is no need for sedation and you can go home right after surgery. well what they do is have you avoid using contact lenses and wear eyeglasses for at least two weeks to rest the eyes and prevent corneal abrasions which could predispose you to infections after surgery. then on the day of the operation, the doctor would then run tests to determine to what degree repair should be initiated. after which the physician would let you lie down and relax, put a clamp on your eyelids, to keep your them open and administer the laser charge to your eyes. it doesn't hurt at all and maybe you'll feel a warm sensation in the eye. after about a couple of minutes, the procedure is finished and you will be sent home and optic drops to prevent infection and inflammation would be prescribed to be put on the eyes every 4 to 6 hours. the results cannot be seen immediately, only after your eyes have rested overnight does eyesight return to almost 20/20 vision. in case you want better vision, you could even request the doctor to try to make it 30/20.

My hus and my sister had it. You are awake. They are both glad they did it.
My hus' doc had him use certain drops and ointments in his eyes while he was healing. If I had known, I would have insisted on getting them ahead of time or while he was having surgery, but I didn't know, so he had to sit in the car while I got everything (about an hour). He said it felt like there was sand in his eyes. Once he put the drops in, he felt better. I would have liked to have those for him to put in on the way home.
