Do you HAVE to get your eyes measured before you buy color contacts?!

Question: Will it ruin my vision over time or something? My mom won't let me get them as a present, because she thinks its dangerous.

P.S. I dont need them for my vision.

Before soft lenses came in to play, eyes were measured so that you would have a proper fit. Today this doesn't always apply. When you are at the eye doctor, they are taking note of whether or not your eyes may require a special fit, what type of strength you need for each eye lens, dry eye and as to whether you have astigmatism. If you are sure that you do not have astigmatism and are not getting lenses with a prescription but for novelty use only, then more than likely you do not have to worry about them ruining your eyes. One thing to take note (and I'm surprised that so many contact lens wearers on here are not aware of this) is the fitting fees that you acquire when purchasing a different brand or if you are a new patient. So yes, your eye doctor does indeed take note as to whether or not you would need any special modifications to your lenses. Although there does seem to be a universal fit for most contact lens wearers, everyone's eyes are different and what might fit one person doesn't always apply to the next.

Bottom line: You should see your eye doctor to find out the proper fit for your eyes (just in case). If your mother is concerned, ask her to contact your local eye doctor to ask him these questions and she will be able to put her mind at ease. Also, if you do get the lenses, make sure to use the exact same sterilization process as a regular contact lens wearer.

You need to get them measured for *any* contacts. They're dangerous if you don't keep them clean, or if you're sensitive to them.

yes you have to get your eyes measured...that way the contacts fit to your eye...you cant wear to big to or small contacts....no matter what color you wear the DR has to measure your eye, and yes it will damage your pupil if you dont have the right size ... walmart is good at sizing and prices. Be Careful!

No, they should be fine.

Mine are prescribed and they help me see lol

But if you are going to get play ones you have to make sure you clean them with the eye soloution before you put them in you're eye.
and dont let them dry up you have to keep them in solotion when there not in you're eye.

Edit: Wtf no you dont have to get you're eye measured are you mad? you obviously dont know anything about contacts, everyone's pupils are roughly the same size so one size fits all, iv'e been a contact lense wearer for 12 years so..

You definatly dont need your eyes measured, the part that the lense actually sits on is roughly the same size on everyone.
Dont listen to idiots saying you do, they shouldnt answer questions if they dont know... They're wasting everyones time.
In short, the answer to your question in "no"
But when you get the lenses, make sure you take them out everynight to soak in contact lense saline solution (to clense, rehydrate them, and to get rid of bacteria and protein that will build up during wear.)
If you do happen to get an eye infection during the time you wear your lenses, you will need to not wear them while you have the infection, and when you go back to wearing them use a NEW set, the old ones will just re-infect your eye.
Ensure you look after your lenses as directed, and don't pro-long the use after the recommended time.
Good luck!

Yes you do have to see an eye doctor. He/she will need to measure your pupil to see which size of colored contact you will need. If you get one that is too small, it won't cover the colored part of your eye correctly, thus causing it too look very obviously fake. I have larger pupils, so I can't wear the Acuvue Colors; I have to wear the Freshlook Colors to accomodate the larger pupil size I have (8.6/14.5). I tried the Acuvue Colors in the eye doctor's office, and could tell immediately why he said they wouldn't work well for me. I don't need vision correction either, but a prescription is still required. You should also see the eye doctor to make sure contacts are appropriate for you. You shouldn't purchase contacts from anyone who doesn't require a scrip for them either; it could be unsafe and it's definitely illegal. Your vision isn't something you want to take chances with.

Contacts are safe, as long as you buy them from a reputable place, AND take care of them as prescribed...meaning disposing of them according to instructions, and cleaning and taking care of them properly.
