Spasm of accomodation?!

Question: what is a spasm of accomodation and what causes it?

Answers: what is a spasm of accomodation and what causes it?

Your eyes have the ability to "zoom" in. That's how you focus close up. Muscles change the shape of the lens to do this. Sometimes those muscles don't relax again afterwards, and your focus stays "close", so that things farther away become slightly blurred. The length of time it takes for it to go back to normal varies from person to person, and sometimes it refuses to relax completely. This leads rushed/busy eye doctors to assume you are nearsighted, when you are not.

Some of them even prescribe glasses for nearsightedness, and then your eyes need to zoom in even more to focus close up. It's a vicious circle and can result in something called pseudomyopia. Quite complex and awkward to deal with.

I had this since my early teens and it was only finally figured out in my fourties, which is what caused me to study optometry as an amateur.

If you suspect accomodative spasm, ask for a cycloplegic refraction. Study the subject yourself and become your own advocate. Don't suffer decades of headaches and expense like I did. The painkillers I took for the headaches have now given me an ulcer. This isn't minor stuf, but eye doctors rarely take it seriously........
