You have to look directly into their eyes. If you are speaking to them, glance away from them once in awhile. If you are not talking and you are listening to them, maintain eye contact.

making eye contact is normal.when you talk to someone you should look at their eyes.

what are you freaking out about? Of course you make Eye contact when you talk. Doesn't mean you have to stare into their eyes. You can look away every now and then. What's the big deal?

I totally understand your question. For some of us, me included, it is uncomfotable to have long periods of eye contact. I have to make myself look at people's eyes. If you don't look at them, they think you are either rude or uninterested.

A fairly high degree of eye contact is customary, in most cultures, but it's not as simple as that.

At close range direct eye contact can be considered too intimidating or intimate, which can cause awkwardness during an eye exam.
As an optometrist, I've looked at too many eyes too closely...
Staring deeply into a girl's eyes doesn't come with emotional impact any more ("Hmm, impressive crypts of Fuch" isn't usually a good comment at such moments.)

There's other factors.
I'm very much a single channel processor. In serious conversation I prefer listening to someone with my eyes closed: if I'm listening to you, I'm *listening* to you. But social convention doesn't often approve of this, though I have managed convince some few of my friends.
