It depends upon the severity of the stye. If a stye is caugt very early, sometimes just gently massaging the effected lid area and hot compresses will do the trick. If a stye becomes more involved it is best to prescribe an oral antibiotic to help resolve the stye. Gently massaging a stye will cause some pain due to the tenderness present associated with the infection.
