A thin film of tears is always available over your eye ball which keeps your eye to breath, to get nourishment etc., while at sleep. In addition the fine oily secretory glands of your conjunctiva over the white of the eye help the eye from not to become dry while asleep.
Try using eye mask when you are sleeping, use lubricating eye drops before you go to sleep. A humidifier also helps. I had this problem due to low humidity in my room.
