Can broke eyeglasses be fixed?!

Question: My 3 yr old just broke the right side of my glasses (the part that goes behind the ear). When I take them to the optometrist, can they order that particular part or will they make me buy whole new frames?

The "part that goes behind the ear" is called the "temple". It is usually a piece of plastic that goes over the metal or plastic part of the "end pieces" (the parts that run alongside the individual's head). It is usually a simple thing to fix, and most optometrists/opticians would charge about $5 for one of them, assuming the glasses are not under warranty. Of course, if the underlying plastic or metal is also broken, then it may be necessary to replace the entire end piece as well; few opticians these days carry the exact match, but might be willing to "trade" a similar in-store model's end piece for yours. If not, then you might have to buy a new frame, again, unless it's under warranty. (FYI: many opticians know that kids, including rugrats, are highly prone to breaking glasses, so they usually have unconditional warranties for them (the glasses; not the kids!)). ;)

It depends on what type of material they are made of....I'd call first and ask before tracking out they way you'll know what to expect.

whole new frames

They should be able just to order the leg you broke. Sometimes they have to get a pair of legs. Even a little while after a frame is discontinued, they can get parts. If they try to make you buy a new frame, take your business else where.
