I have really screwed up.?!

Question: I have had bad vision since I was a kid, but now I am worried. I think I have truly f*cked up (no better word, really) my vision and permanently destroyed it.

When I went to get a checkup and get new contacts in July 2007, my prescription was -3.75 in the left eye and -5.50 in the right... that's pretty awful!

I have not been taking good care of my eyes, and right now I'm not wearing my contacts or my glasses... and my vision is SO much worse than I remember it ever being. This may be because I wear my contacts all the time and I'm not used to seeing poorly, but I think I really have ruined my eyes.

My browser's text has been reset to 4 times larger than it usually is and it's still fuzzy; I can't make out the continents on the large world map on the wall across my bedroom.

So, is it possible that I have irreversibly damaged my eyes? Now I am far, far better about caring for them and am doing just what the doctor said, but I fear that it's too late.

Have you tried looking at the computer with your glasses or contacts on?

With the July 07 Rx, you will have blurred vision when viewing anything further away than 20cm to 25cm without glasses. That is about 10 inches. So unless your computer monitor is closer than 10 inches, it is normal for it to be blurry without glasses. Also normal to not see the map on your wall clearly.

You can't make your vision worse by wearing or not wearing glasses. You can't go blind from needing glasses or needing stronger glasses. You can cause eye damage by not caring for your contacts, but only in the sense of getting an eye infection, not in the sense of causing a need for stronger contacts.

If vision is blurry with glasses, then you need to have an eye exam. There must be an eye doctor in your dorm town, and if you have time to type on Yahoo, you have time for an eye exam.

have u considered laser-eye surgery?
the results were amazing for me

talk to a specialist and see if you would be a good candidate for corrective eye surgery.

You didn't say how old you are, but my eyes were similar to yours. I was -5.75 in my right and -3.75 in my left. Without my contacts, I can read a book, but the computer or reading a newspaper is a little bit too far away. Now that I'm getting older, my vision is shifting to that "reading glasses" mode. I am now -5.25 in the right and -2.25 in my left.

I don't think you have damaged your eyes, but I can't imagine how you go through the day! LOL. I hope you don't drive. :-) What is your vision like if you put your contacts back in? or wear your glasses? Are you just out of lenses and can't afford new ones? A warehouse store like Costco can be inexpensive for lenses.

hi friend,, ive seen people worse than you like -7.00/-8.00
you still in asafe side.... but my advice to you if like contact lenses is to use the disposable daily lenses. because you dont have to take care of them , put them one day and threw them...
train your eyes to see things far.....
and try not to use the computer for long ours ..
it make the eyes get use to the distance between you and the screen ....
dont use the lenses when you use the computer , it make your eyes dry.............
and use the lenses just when you go out....
this way you give your eyes some rest...........
and dont feel bad,, just be happy

Hi!

If you fear that you have damaged your eyes by not wearing your contacts all the time, relax! If your eyes ARE getting worse, it is definitely not due to the fact that you have been delinquent in putting on your contact lenses.

If your eyes ARE getting worse, there are several possibilities. For one, the refractive error may be increasing. This is not unusual for someone your age. At 18, the grade of your eyes may not yet reached a point where it has stabilized. For your own comfort and safety, it would probably be a good idea to get your refractive error checked at least once a year so that you can attain your best corrected visual acuity.

Another thing you have to take into consideration is that you may be developing changes in your retina that come from having myopia. While your refractive error is not severe (I've seen prescriptions greater than -10.00D!), this is still a possibility. This is also something that your ophthalmologist can check. The earlier, the more regularly, the better.

As for laser surgery... if your refractive error is not yet stable, the effects of laser surgery will definitely not be permanent. Laser surgery only corrects for the refractive error that you have at the time you have surgery. So, if your eye continues to change, you may need additional treatments in the future. Consult your ophthalmologist.

Good luck!

Right here we go. -3.50 and -5.50 is not bad. I don't know how old you are but laser treatment should only be undertaken when your myopia has stabilised. You might and I mean might have progressive myopia but it is unlikely. No wonder your having a trying time seeing things at a distance but I am a little concerned that you having problems at close range. This is not going to go away so see a professional. I once saw a man who was treating his glaucoma, a problem that can send you blind by going to faith healers. Hope this helps. Philip Optician.PS No I don't think you have done any damage. Go and get it checked out ASAP.

my eyes are screwed up too, well, at least one is...

i have hard contacts and i'll tell you, it's not awesome.
my eyes are messed because i've got keratoconus, and maybe you should consider getting checked for that.
