I think the reason sitting close to the TV is associated with getting bad vision, is that kids who's vision is going bad sit close to the TV, so the TV gets blamed for it.

Nope, will not hurt your eyes... sore, tired, watery, but not damage. You see a lot of kids sit up close to tvs because its a surround sound affect... they are into the action and they feel like a part of it. Anyways, when you focus on watching tv your blink rate slows down therefor it causes your eyes to water a lot and feel tired.
