Question about the eye doctor?!

Question: I have worn contacts for 4 years. I wear them all the time from the time I get up at 6 until about 11 when I go to sleep. It is literally the first thing I do when I wake up and the last thing I do before I go to sleep. Sometimes they hurt my eyes at night but I still leave them in b/c I can't see if I dont wear them. I am going to the eye doctor next monday and I was wondering if they would be able to tell that I wear them this much. The thing is that I don't have glasses but I kind of want some to wear at night or every once in a while at school. I don't have any that I can see out of b/c I haven't worn them in 4 years and didn't wear them much before I had contacts. So I kind of want the doctor to tell me I have to get some. Do you think this is possible? I know its weird but I can't just ask my mom because I hated glasses when I had them so I am embarassed to tell her that now I actually want some.
Thanks!

Well, with contact lenses, you always need to have a back-up pair of glasses. There are days when your eyes are irritated, or, if you are having health issues with that eye (i.e. pink eye), you wouldn't be able to wear contact lenses.

Also, if you don't have money to buy contact lenses, if you happened to run out unexpectedly, you wouldn't have anything to see with.

And, from the looks of your description, you need glasses to wear in the evening to give your eyes a break from the day. I know that sometimes my contacts just need to come out because they are irritating me so badly.

It is important to allow your eyes time to "breathe". Some contacts don't allow oxygen to pass through to your eye as well as others. Our doctor sometimes will prescribe contacts that allow more oxygen to pass through. These are sometimes more expensive, but, they are worth it because you usually end up with a more comfortable lense, as well.

Just tell your mom that you need a back-up pair. If she gives you any problems, there are more economical solutions.

For instance, you said you had a pair of glasses before? If the frame is in good shape, you could just have your new Rx put into that frame. That way, your mom doesn't have to pay money for the new frame, but you still get new, updated lenses. She would just need to pay probably around, I would say, $100-120 for the lenses. That would get you a polycarbonate lense, which is a shatter-proof and scratch-resistant lense that will last you the full 2 years.

Just tell the eye doctor that your eyes have been bothering you lately from wearing your contacts so much and you would like a pair of glasses. Tell your mom the same thing BEFORE you go so the two of you will be on the same page. No worries. Trust me, peoples oppinions change all the time. It's ok. Let your mom know you want the glasses with good reason. Your eyes being irritated every day is not good. Take care of your eyes. You only get 1 pair!

Even people who hate glasses and only wear a pair of contacts should get glasses just in case something happens to their contacts. Or, they get an eye infection or something that prevents them from wearing contacts.

The eye doctor isn't going to say that you need to have them. They don't really care. Just tell your mom the same thing you told us.

Don't be embarrassed! Contacts can really make your eyes sore. I wore them from when I was 15-24 and this past March I got Lasik Intralase Eye Surgery. :) Now I don't need either. Anyhow just tell your doctor you would like a prescription for glasses too because you would like to give your eyes a break sometimes. He'll totally understand! Good luck!

Tell your mom you need them because the contacts are hurting your eyes.
Or..
I wear mine alot, the doctor told me to take them out during the day, clean them, and put them back in. You could do that once or twice a day.

I would get a pair of glasses. I have both contacts and glasses and it really make a difference in my eyes when I can take out my hard contacts and wear my glasses. It gives my eyes a break.
