Question about the eye doctor and my contacts?!

Question: I have worn contacts for 4 years. I wear them all the time from the time I get up at 6 until about 11 when I go to sleep. It is literally the first thing I do when I wake up and the last thing I do before I go to sleep. Sometimes they hurt my eyes at night but I still leave them in b/c I can't see if I dont wear them. I am going to the eye doctor next monday and I was wondering if they would be able to tell that I wear them this much. The thing is that I don't have glasses but I kind of want some to wear at night or every once in a while at school. I don't have any that I can see out of b/c I haven't worn them in 4 years and didn't wear them much before I had contacts. So I kind of want the doctor to tell me I have to get some. Do you think this is possible that he would tell me to get them? I know its weird but I can't just ask my mom because I hated glasses when I had them so I am embarassed to tell her that now I actually want some.
Thanks!

When the doctor asks you how the comfort is with lenses, be honest. Tell him your eyes hurt a bit after 12 to 13 hours of wear. Usually the doctor will ask you how many hours a day you wear the contacts, so tell the truth then too -- 16 -18 hours a day. Then ask him if you should wear them a little less and, again, tell the truth -- you wear them that long because you don't have glasses and that you want glasses but aren't sure if your mom will agree to it. Likely he will tell your mom you should have them.

Or you could tell your mom the truth: now that you are more mature and not so concerned about your appearance, you would like some glasses to wear to take a break from contacts. I'm sure she will understand.

well...i wear my contacts about as much as you do. but you deffinately SHOULDNT sleep with them. you have bigger chance of infection. and if you want glasses YOU have to speak. the doctor is not going to tell you you need glasses. and if you told your mom you hated glasses....then just tell her you want some because your contacts bother you sometimes.

But if your contacts hurt your eyes when they are in...either you scratched your eye or they arent cleaned good enough. make sure when you take them out you rub them in the solution in your hand...and then put them in the case and soak them in the solution. That helps a lot.

The eye doctor would definaley give you a new glasses perscription, thats what he's there for. Just tell him that your having problems wearing your contacts all day and you were wandering if you could get a new perscription for glasses.

I wear my contacts for long periods as well. I used to wear Torrecs, which my doctor suggested not to wear them for longer than 4-6 hours.... well... I'm literally legally blind without them, I wear -8.0 on each eye, yes, BLIND! So mow the doctor fitted me with contacts that are made in England called Hydro 02, they are really really thin, and are comfortable to wear from 6 AM to midnight like I do.

Well this is a tough situation. First off, yes the doctor can tell if you're using your contacts 24/7. The mineral build up rips up the skin under your eye lids. Have you noticed, when you take them out, if your eye's are itchy? If so, this is why.

Secondly, the eye exams differ from contacts to lenses. The exam for contacts is different than lenses, because the contacts are close to your eyes, lenses are about 1/2 inch away...therefore different testing.

You can ask for a more "breathable" contact...assuming they are disposable. If he doesn't look under your eye lid, some don't, then you need to tell him you wear them more than recommended...you should have a thin lens to allow more oxygen, since your wearing them often.

Take care.

you can tell me what you want, but the eyes will tell your story to the Doctor. It would be very wise to get you a pair of glasses to back up your contacts, as to not put yourself in this position anymore.

Swallow your pride and ask your parents!
