A stye is a localised infection of one (or more) of the oil gland's along the eyelid margin. The best treatment is to put a hot compress (flannel or cotton wool dipped into hot water)over the affected eyelid. Hold it there for a few minutes and gently massage the eyelids. Do this a couple of times a day for a few days and it will speed up recovery.
The next step is to prevent them coming back is to keep your eyelids clean, so wipe everyday with a warm, clean flannel and use hot compresses about once a week.
Do not pull any eyelashes out- this could spread the infection and make it worse (and more painful)

They're caused by an infection in the root of an eyelash, if you're feeling brave you could locate the one that's the problem and pull it out - don't use tweezers near your eye, use your fingers and wash them first! In any case, bathe the eyelid several times a day with warm boiled water and sterile cotton wool - a fresh piece each time. It will go, be patient they are a pain!

Hello Verity,

Styes are bacterial infections that lead to the obstruction of oil producing glands around the eyelashes or eyelids. Styes are seen as small bumps on the eyelids.

Styes (also called "sty") are usually harmless and will go away after several days on their own as your body fights the infection.

There are some cases where surgical draining of the stye or the application of antibiotic drops may be required. To prevent a stye in the eye; always washing hands before touching the eyes and keeping good eye hygiene, especially for contact users.

To treat them,

Apply warm compresses for several minutes 3 to 4 times daily

Application of prescribed antibiotic drops may also be used to help fight the infection

Surgical drainage of the stye may also be necessary if the stye is not responding to treatment

I was told they are a sign of stress, but the answers above seem to make more sense.

It's an infection, as you've read. Wash the eye in warm, salty water. Use boiled water and let it cool and 1 teaspoon of salt to a glass ( 1/2 pint ) water. If it's really sore and angry it could be Staph. aureus so don't visit people in hospital. See a doctor for antibiotic eye ointment.

Wash your hands before and after touching it.

i can answer this one for ya! =)

sty's develop when you have dirty hands and you rub your eye too much...the bacteria gets in the eye and it forms.

to get rid of it...if you have any type of gold like i necklace or something...put it on there...it draws it out.
make sure you sterelize it first though with alcohol or something.
it works!
