Eye question please ?!

Question: my sons mother called me and imformed me that she took him to an eye dr and said the bill was close to 500 dollars.I've never had experience with eye dr's because i don't wear glasses. Is that about the right price for glasses? or..why would you think the bill is that price?.My brother said that is high and that he must have gotten designer glasses....thank you for your help.

I have worked in the Optical field for over 10 years and have worked for many different types of optical shops. Really it varies by the location you go to for the pricing. In my honest opinion $500.00 for a child's pair of glasses is high. Some optical places will have packages for children's eyewear so they are at a discounted price. The optometrist I currently work for is a higher end practice but even the childrens designer frames run less than $150.00 the lenses which are polycarbonate run $118.00 and the exam in general is about $75.00. If you add that up it is still less than $400.00. I would recommend that you ask her for an itemized bill prior to agreeing to pay the above amount if she calls the office she had the glasses made at they will be able to provide her with an itemized bill to break it down for you.

geeze that actually sounds reasonable!! After the appt and the cost of the exam, tests, and glasses, it's a bargain! If your son is under 18 and living in the U.S, glasses have to have added features by law ie: shatterproff lenses which can cost $50-$100 extra dollars!

i payed $400 after my insurance for an eye exam and glasses

just regular glasses

Yes, glasses are expensive.

And that's not the end of the story.

The worst part is that prescription glasses have side effects which is going to make children's nearsightedness worse, hence destroy their vision.

$$$ ......

Children CANNOT tolerate the SIDE EFFECTS of the prescription glasses, which cause their nearsightedness to get worse. (This also applies to adults whose nearsightedness still gets worse.)

International Myopia Prevention Association (IMPA) have filed a Petition at the FDA requesting enforcement action to require eye care professionals to issue written warnings to parents that distance glasses worsen myopia in children.
The failure to advise parents that myopia can be reduced or prevented constitutes unlawful misbranding.

If your nearsightedness stops progressing, that means your eyes are old enough to tolerate the side effects of the prescription glasses.

If treated properly, nearsightedness progression stops, even in children. That is what happens in my office.

Outrageous. My daughter paid $300 and I was annoyed.

Ask for a copy of the bill. She should be able to provide it for you. Or call the office directly. If your son has insurance, ask if that was before or after insurance payment.
