Is it a wise choice to get glasses?!

Question: my eye sight is pretty bad.
I sit toward the front of the classroom and still can't read what's written on the overhead unless I squint.

according to my friends,
getting glasses will only weaken my eye sight because my eyes will start depending on them.

they tell me to just exercise my eyes before looking at something.
I tried that.
and everything is still yet so blurry..

what is the wise thing to do?

ive had glasses since i was three, you're friends dont know what they're talking about lol. i used to go to an othemolagist and they would give me exericises to stregthen my eyes. its like a sprained muscle, if you keep using it when its not performing properly you'll put too much stress on it and it will steadily get worse. you should make an appointment with an optomestrist to get your eyes tested

Have your eyes checked.

The best thing to do would be to get your eyes checked. If your doctor says that you need glasses, then you do. I understand what your friends are saying about your eyes depending on glasses, but sometimes, glasses can improve your eyesight enough that you may not have to wear them anymore. Your eyesight isn't something you want to mess with. Your doctor can tell you if you just need them for reading, or if you need them all the time. Follow whatever the doc says and you will be fine. They aren't going to give you glasses if you don't need them!

I use glasses and lens.

I was just like you! Get your eyes checked before they get worse. Yes you'll depend on them but it's better than being blind when you're old. LOL

There is a lot of debate about whether or not glasses are good or not. Some say that they are a crutch, and that if we use them our vision will just continue to get worse--they say that what we really should do are special exercises to improve our vision and our eyes. Others say, that is just nuts--no amount of exercises will change the shape of our eyeballs (and our eyeballs change shape as we age) or genetics.

I say, deal with what is right now, and deal with what may be as you can. Which means, get the glasses today so that you don't end up missing out on stuff you need to learn, AND maybe also do the exercises that are supposed to help your eyes "heal," because hey, maybe it'll work. But don't shoot yourself in the foot by trying to squint hard enough to see the lesson that is being taught, or the car that's headed straight for you if you're driving, or whatever.

Your vision may never improve. It may get worse. Or it may get better, or it may stay the same. Who knows. All you know is that, right now, you have a problem. So deal with the immediate problem, and take steps, if you think they're warranted, to try to deal with problems down the road.

i would go and have my eyes checked and go by what my doctor tells me to do.. but yes i would wear glasses

i cant believe your friends! your poor vision is not because of your muscles that need to be trained, its got to do with the optics and the size of your eye..NOT wearing glasses is going to make you weaker and more fatigued, plus put more strain on your eyes. glasses dont make your eyes worse!! they do the work for you instead of your eyes doing it =)
PLEASE GET YOUR EYES CHECKED!!!

You should definitely get your eyes checked out. Your vision could actually get even worse by not addressing the problem now. Your eyes are straining harder to help you see better, which can cause more loss of vision.

In a way, I guess you could say your eyes would become "dependent" on the glasses, because you will see better with them. It isn't really weakening your natural vision though. You are not seeing as well as you could be right now. If there's something out there that can help you see better, it's definitely worth looking into. And if you don't like glasses, you could always talk to your eye doctor about contacts. They're very comfortable after you get used to them, and much easier to wear when playing sports, etc.

Definitely go get your eyes checked asap. We only get one pair of eyes...

Are your friends:
a) Eye care profesionnals?
b) Amateurs who have studied this topic for years?
c) Simply older people with lots of experience?

If none of the above, maybe they aren't the best people to give you advice.....

If you can't see stuff, you can't see stuff. If you are nearsighted you'll need corrective lenses to see stuff. Or you'll miss out. Your education will suffer. Then your social life. Silly to go through that. No, go get an eye test, get the correction you need, and rejoin us in the seeing stuff world.

Yes, it is a wise choice to get glasses, IF and ONLY IF, your eyes are old enough to tolerate the side effects of the prescription glasses.

Your friends are right, "getting glasses will only weaken my eye sight because my eyes will start depending on them."

It is fine if you just have to depend on glasses and your vision stays the same for the rest of your life. HOWEVER, that is not the case since you are young.

In your case, if you start wearing prescription glasses, your nearsightedness will get worse and worse, and you will need stronger and stronger glasses, and you might end up being blind as a result of retinal detachment and other problems which is closely associated with high myopia(nearsightedness).

Children CANNOT tolerate the SIDE EFFECTS of the prescription glasses, which cause their nearsightedness to get worse. (This also applies to adults whose nearsightedness still gets worse.)

International Myopia Prevention Association (IMPA) have filed a Petition at the FDA requesting enforcement action to require eye care professionals to issue written warnings to parents that distance glasses worsen myopia in children.
The failure to advise parents that myopia can be reduced or prevented constitutes unlawful misbranding.

My advise to you is:
Try to improve your vision or cure your nearsightedness.

At the very least, you should keep your nearsightedness under control.

If treated properly, nearsightedness progression stops, even in children. That is what happens in my office.

I'm an ophthalmic optician (known professionally as optometrists in US and Canada)

The guy before me is a quack. Your friends don't know what they're talking about. If you can't see, trying harder isn't going to help, unless you're a mild hyperope, and that'll just wear you out and give you headaches. Go see an optometrist and get some glasses, or contacts, with backup glasses.
