Optometry: What does this prescription say?!

Question: My optometrist gave me the following prescription, but I am not sure what it says after the 450 and what kind of contacts to order at 1800contacts.com. Please define what the prescription says and what type of contacts I have to get (these are my first contacts)

I think this is an eyeglass prescription; I have not had the contact lens fitting done yet. Is the fitting absolutely necessary?

The numbers after the 4.50 specify your astigmatism, plus the left eye has a small amount of prism.

It is a glasses prescription, not a contact lens prescription. If you want contacts and have never worn them before, you need to have a fitting including instruction on how to handle the lenses and several months of follow up care.

The prescription for contacts will specify a brand of contacts.
You will need toric contact lenses which are more complicated to fit.

Call your optometrist for a contact lens fitting.

After the 450 is a c with a line above it and means "with." It's medical short hand. All you have to do is fax a copy of that to 1800 Contacts and they will interpret it for you. However, it is a prescription for eyeglasses; not contacts.

Yes, a contact fitting is necessary, it doesn't cost any extra, either.

Contact lens fittings are not avoidable. the Rx you got is most likely the glasses Rx- most doctors will not release the contact Rx until a followup visit

Ditto above posters about needing a fitting for CLs. Toric lenses are contact lenses that are weighted in the bottom. This allows them to correct for astigmatism, which is what you have in both eyes (the second 2 numbers in each eye).
