Can the eye doctor tell how much I wear my contacts?!

Question: I wear contacts about 17 hours a day. I have frequency 55 aspheric lenses. I am going to they eye doctor this week and I was wondering if he would be able to tell how much I wear them. I wear them everyday from the time I get up until the time I go to bed. I don't have glasses so I don't wear those. Is it bad that I wear them this much? Do you think he will be able to tell?

We're not actually allowed to sigh out loud, or tear someone's hair out (ours or theirs, depending...)
But yes, frequently we wonder why people abuse their eyes out of convenience or laziness.
And why they come to professionals but aren't prepared to take our advice seriously.

And yes it shows in the cornea all too often, with dilated blood vessels or ghost vessels, irregular endotheial cells, poor end-point refractions, poor tear patterns...
Even if people have tried to "clean up their act" for a few days prior to the visit.

Before I retired, I used to speculate on writing a paper on a unsuspected side-effect of contact lens wear: that it reduced people's IQ by about 10%
Because contact lens wearers seemed to do more stupid things than the rest of the population.

Ok, it *was* always *my* hair I tore out.

yes he'll know. my sister wears her contacts every single day without taking them off,she has a special kind of them so i dont know if u have the same.i think its bad to wear it that much

He will if you tell him. Be honest with your doctor, otherwise what is the point of even going? The chance of staph infection increases with prolonged use of contacts, but I'm not sure if you are at risk simply by wearing them 17 hours, as long as you keep them clean. You can ask if there is a problem with keeping them on for 17 hours rather than being blissfully ignorant.

i think the only thing he can go by is the wear and tear on the actual contact itself, and protein build up.

i have focus night & days, i never take them out, not even to clean them. i love these contacts and am not looking forward to buying more! 350$$!!

Yes! I wore my contacts the same way for a couple of years and didn't have glasses to alternate with, then one day last month I woke up and my eye was swollen shut and it hurt really bad. The doctor told me it was because I wore them too much and said they make small scratches that he could see. I guess over-wearing them slowly irritates the eye until it swells in some spots, then the contact starts rubbing the swollen spots. He said my scratches were pretty bad and now I'm stuck wearing glasses for a month until they recover. So don't do it! I thought it was fine since they never hurt, then one day it just all caught up.

The eye doc looks at your eyes through a microscope.
Maybe he can tell quite a bit about your eyes, y'think?
I certainly wouldn't pay for their services otherwise. Be glad
that they can see it all. If you ARE wearing your lenses too
much, the doc will tell YOU.
