Disposable contact lense wearers? What do you pay?!

Question: What do you pay for lenses per month? I have met so many people that wear these and they always say because they are cheaper.

I paid a couple hundred dollars for my gas permeable and they have lasted around 5 years. Even adding in contact solution and cleaning solution that would be about $100.00 per year.

At my last visit I fully expected to get new contacts but after they inspected them and gave them a good cleaning, they said my current contacts were just fine providing my vision hadn't changed when my eyes were examined. It hadn't.

Why do so many people get lenses that they have to pay for every month and then throw them away?

I know it's easy if you lose one, you have another one right there. But I've only lost 3 contacts in 27 years and it was easy to get it replaced. And the cost is still a one-time cost.

I just don't get it. It seems like a racket to me. And another unnecessary expense. Everyone I know goes right to disposables and never even considers gas perm.

If it were up to me, I would fit most of my patients in gas perms, and I do, in fact, fit a lot of them I believe it is a 2 part answer. First, there is marketing, and as we all know, these companies, like Johnson and Johnson, the leading disposable manufacturer (Acuvue), marketing goes a long way. Then there is the practioner. I know many doctors that don't like to fit them, because they feel they are harder to fit or they just don't know how, and so they use disposables because they are easy. There is also the attitude of some patients that want everything "now" and do not want to go thru the adjustment period. The fact is, gas perms are healtier, safer, and less expensive, not to mention, the vision is usally far superior to any soft lense on the market. They last longer, keep you more stable, and are low risk for infection. They also take up less "chair time or office time " over all. I love fitting gas perms and always try to fit my patients into them Thanks for your input, but I don't believe it is a racket but lack of knowledge..
