depending on your prescription your eye doctor should have "trials" (a pair of contacts for you to try out) in stock. "trials" with your prescription do not come in colors. there are separate color "trials" for you to decide which color you would like to go with that do not have any prescription in them at all. if you have a difficult prescription to fill then it can take anywhere from a couple of days to 2 weeks for you to get a pair of "trials" in. from what you're describing though 'squinting and being far-sighted', your doctor should really have no problem supplying you with some contacts.

Most optometrists will make sure you can put them in and take them out fine, and teach you how to clean them before they release you with the contacts. The trial period is neccessary especailly for new contact lens wearers because the doctor wants to make sure you are happy with the contacts before ordering.

ALWAYS have a pair of glasses for days you don't have time to put in contacts, incase you get an eye infection (DO NOT WEAR YOUR CONTACTS IF YOU HAVE ONE), also glasses come in handy when you've taken your contacts out at night and you just want to lay in bed and watch some tv!!

That's really hard to tell. Some have contacts in stock and some have to order. Are you going somewhere like Dr's Value Vision, or a private doctor?

That's somewhat down to you as well as them.

If your prescription is straightforward (no significant astigmatism as well as the longsight, for example) trial lenses of the right power may be in stock.
But no responsible doctor is going to let you have them until you've demonstrated you can get them in and out reliably.
While some people find that "no problem", for others that *definitely* takes more than one visit!

Do they know you want to go straight for contacts? A contact fitting takes more time than a standard exam and if you haven't booked for that, depending on the practitioner, that may mean the fitting is a separate appointment (but that wil mean, already knowing your Rx, that trial lenses can be pre-ordered if necessary.) Almost any except the most unusual custom -made lenses can be got as fast as the postal/courier service will deliver them.
They should be trial lenses first because even if you want them badly, the eyes' reaction to them may deliver the majority vote, at least on brand and type.

And if you really do need contacts, a back up or emergency pair of spectacles is strongly recommended.
There will be days when you want the Rx but the eyes don't want the contacts and, with the glasses option available, there's less temptation to overwear the contacts.
(Which you can get away with right up to the point you can't, just like driving on bald tyres.)

In most cases, your Doctor will have trial lenses that you will get before the Doctor finalizes the Rx- meaning youi'll wear the trials for a week, and when yoiu go for your followup any necessary changes can be made at that time.

Well, from my experience..the doc writes your script and you go on over and get them filled!! Now days it works just like going to a regular medical doctor. Eye glasses are different tho. you have to wait on them usually a few weeks!! My daughters eye doc put contacts in her eyes the day of the visit for her to wear till her glasses came in!! However..the first visit may be different. Its been so long ago I can't remember.

get them on the way out
