Is $500 too much to pay for glasses?!

Question: I've been wearing contact lenses for about ten years and I decided to get a pair of glasses for work. I bought a good pair, the ones that I wanted, with the extras. A co-worker said him and his wife were going to get new glasses, and they would probably spend about $1000. I never remember glasses costing so much. I noticed you can buy them online a lot cheaper. Is buying glasses online better than going to a regular store?

Not in this day and age- the price of gas is driving glasses up too! You dont mention whether or not you were buying progressives or any other bifocal- Most of your top of the line, digitally processed lenses these days can be $600- $700 a pair- not including a designer frame. Sounds like you did get a reasonable deal, given you got what you wanted. The thing is- you dont want to scrimp on your lenses- especially of you spend any time on the computer during your day- Take it from someone that has worn the less expensive lenses- then had the best- there is NO comparison!

no as long as you can wear them for a long period and you wont outgrow them or get dated.

I don't know about shopping online but I would say that $500 is too much to pay for glasses. I sure wouldn't pay it. I purchased a pair of glasses recently for $286 CA and they were transitions, UV protection and anti-scratch. Oh, and it included taxes. I bought them at Wal-Mart (not my most favourite place to shop but they have a good warranty and the prices are right-service was good too). Previous to that I purchased a pair at Sears for about the same price on a half price sale. If you look around I am sure you will find a good deal. If you want to spend $500 then you may be able to buy 2 for the price of one, or more. It just depends on how much you want to spend and where you want to spend it. Good luck.

That sounds like about $200 to much, but welcome to the new world of rising gas prices

I would rather go to the docs office because if they don't fit they can be fixed right there instead of having to send they off somewhere.

my last pair of glasses that i bought were about $630! but again they were polo ralph lauren so.......!

mine cost me over $500, but thats because I had a prism, glare-proof coating, and the UV coating.

It depends on whatever stuff you have added onto them. The prescriptions can cost up to $750, maybe more. It really depends on where you get them. Online shopping may be cheaper but I would investigate the sites first and ask the stores too and see what's better for you.

hi, mine cost me $900 just 2 weeks ago.
All depends on the extras and if they are designers..
Don,t ever buy on the Internet.

remenber you have 2 eyes and money will not buy you 2 others if you scrap those.

Go to a good optician because the best quality for your lenses is the more comfort.

Well I would say yes. Do you have medical insurance or something, perhaps they will pay for some of it.

I would say, if the glasses are not full-time, or unless you really really love the frames, that $250-300 is a reasonable amount to pay. Then again, it depends on you - will you get sick of the frames and wish to buy new ones, or will you keep them for a long time?

I think it's fine if you buy frames online but you should get the lenses done at a local store.

Depends on your personal budget. No one can answer that for you!

I think it's outrageous. I was angry when my daughter's cost $300. I buy mine online, and including multifocal lenses, and every coating they offer, pay well under $300. And there's nothing wrong with the quality. I've used them 5 times.

Thats normal, you know most of the time you are paying for quality, if you are not sure, see if you can find an independent consumer guide for opticians to establish which ones to go to. I wouldnt advise buying online, nothing beats feeling the product before you buy and when you buy in a store you know the frame is professionally fitted and the measurements are accurate. The glasses i will be getting soon will cost just over $1000. But thats designer frames, with thin transition lenses and antireflection. But seriously you do get what you pay for.

No, it really depends on the frames chosen and the prescription, as well as lens features. If they wear multi focal lenses, 500 is middle of the road. I don't think I'd buy my glasses online... where will you go for service, like adjustments and new nosepads?
