Yes. Several things can cause swelling of the optic nerve head.

1) Papilledema -- swelling of the nerve associated with the presence of a space occupying lesion or tumor within the brain. Treatment needed.

2) Psuedopapilledema -- (sometimes referred to as Pseudotumor Cerebri) swelling of the nerve seen many times in 15 to 30 year old overweight females. Can occur outside this group but more unusual. Recommend changes in lifestyle (diet / excercise) to decrease weight.

3) Papillitis -- INFLAMMATION of the nerve head. Tends to be monocular (occurs only in one eye) and can be associated with systemic disease. Treatment needed.

4) Buried drusen of the nerve head -- Some individuals have "drusen bodies" (not a tumor or cancer) buried deeper in the nerve head which make the nerve appear to be swollen. No treatment available. Often this is a stable non progressive condition.

There are two causes:
1. papilledema, which is associated with high pressure inside your head ... often caused by "pseudotumor" which means "false tumor" in overweight people
2. optic neuritis, which usually affects only one eye at a time.
Yes, you should see a neurologist, who will order an MRI of your brain among other things...

See a specialist...all eye doctors are good for is an occasional checkup and prescribing prescription lenses. Don't panic until you know there is something to panic about :)

I would think an infection could be a possiblity. Keep going to the doctor as instrcuted. I wouldn't blow this off for sure. See the neurologist since it is related to a nerve.

I agree with Yagman... go to the neurologist ASAP. I have drusen in my right eye, they thought it was swollen, went through a few tests at the eye doctor (i worked for them) then went and had an MRI and blood work to rule out MS, Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis.... all fine... just got a few spots that showed up in my eye.... but at least i know they are there and no cause for major concern if i go to a different eye doc
