Would somebody with hemianopia be allowed to drive?!

Question: Left field homonymous hemianopia that is.

Answers: Left field homonymous hemianopia that is.

ive seen several patients with this condition due to a stroke or head injury when i worked with an ophthalmologist. The issue here isnt a matter of not driving, its driving only in comfortable situations and of course paying extra careful attention. being that its on the left, that will be hard to check blind areas when moving vehicle over etc. It is unsafe, but not uncommon, however the ones i know drive during clear daylight, pay extra attention to surroundings and only drive in familiar areas, otherwise they get someone to drive them.

They probably shouldn't drive. Do you feel yourself or this person would be safe? I really would suggest that to drive would be a bad, irresponsible decision.

It depends on the local regulations about driving. Some places don't check field at all when qualifying for driving, some allow with special devices or limitations, some would not allow.

You will need to check with your doctor and the Ministry of Transport as to the regulations where you live.
