Why is it bad to leave your contact lenses in?!

Question: I have soft lenses and usually leave them in for up to a week at a time. I know this is not good, but why? They don't hurt, and I see fine. What are the effects?

Sleeping in contact lenses is a major cause of keratitis, which is corneal infection. When you sleep in contacts and wear them all day your corneas get deprived of oxygen and swell. This makes them very susceptible to infection, especially when the lenses have bacteria on them (which is most of the time). It does depend on the brand of lenses you use but even the ones especially made for sleeping in can cause problems. (I know all this because im an optometrist)

The eye actually begins to film over around it and it causes irregularities in the shape of the eye. Generally, thats not a good thing...

If you don't take them out and change them or clean them as directed; you could get an infection. You can get bacteria in your eye or on the lenses themselves if you are not following the docs instructions. If that happens it could possibly damage your sight.
