I believe you are talking about gentle molding contact lenses, which your doctor can prescribe you to wear overnight. With these contact lenses, your vision can actually improve while you sleep as you mentioned. For some, improvement can be noticed quickly. One article says improvement can be noticed "overnight". The main problems, as I understand it, are costs (insurance does not pay for these lenses) and adjustment time (it takes a while at first). Costs can be very astronomical especially for those with high astigmatism. I have high astigmatism and keratoconus, for example, and my eye doctor told me that the cost for gentle molding lenses would be over $10,000. My insurance would not pay anything toward that either. I think those are called hard contacts.
The cons are that they hurt so bad when you put them on.
You will get used to them however.
The pros are that you can see clearly without contacts.

I do that with my contact lenses now.... Acuvue 2 lenses. Apparently you aren't supposed to but I've been doing it for 4+ years without a negative change in vision, actually it got better. I use eyedrops right before I go to bed, and I wake up perfectly normal.
I hardly remember I have corrective eyewear! Probly make me go blind someday...oh well.

There are contacts out there that you can wear overnight. I think they're called Continuous Wear Contacts. I have disposal ones that I'm suppose to take out at night, and throw away after 2 weeks, but I have on occasion, left them in overnight and I don't have a problem with them. The issue with having your contacts in overnight is that your eye requires oxygen and the contact blocks that. Leaving them in overnight, even if they are continuous wear contacts, is not the greatest idea. I think it would be nice on occasion though.
