Whats a good/recommended age to take a child for their first eye examination?!

Question: Children can be examined at any age. Even during infancy, there are eye diseases that can be caught early on such as eye turns, amblyopia, retinoblastoma-cancer of the eye that afflicts about 2000 children each year. If you have a family history of any of these things you should bring your children at as soon as you can even before 1 year old. It is really never too early for an eye exam. There are techniques that optometrists can use that does not require the patient to be "verbal". So if you have concerns I would not hesitate at all.

I took my kids with me from when they were about three, I figured that way they would not be scared and also that any problems with their sight would be picked up from an early age!

If you are having concerns, you should talk to your pediatrician right away. They can test vision and hearing at birth. If there are no concerns, the first eye exam is usually done between the ages of three and four.

they get tested at infant school unless you have any concerns i wouldnt bother

when they start complaining about their eyesight or that they cant see.

I had my daughter's eyes examined this month, she's 9...the doc did tell me she would wear glasses maybe in the next two years, with the optometrist test he was able to find out she was border line near sighted.

as soon as they know their letters, but if you think something is wrong they can be checked earlier
