What do they use to dialate your eyes at the optometrist?!


Question: I just had my annual eye exam today and they dialated my eyes. I was just curious what the drops are that dialate your eyes and maybe why?

Phenylephrine (safer to use 2.5%) is pretty standard to dilate your pupils. Some may choose to go as high as 10%, and if they need to evaluate the periphery of your eyes, they may use tropicamide. Hope it helps some.

Because u have the sharpest vision when ur eyes r dilated and the drops signal your pupil to reflect light at shorter wavelentghs and dilate :)
