Is it bad for your eyes to wear monthly contact lenses for longer than a month?!

Question: I'm guessing no since the optical assistant said that she often gets 2 months wear out of her's. Though, I just realized that I had been wearing the same contacts for like 3 months! I used to wear yearly contacts, so I'm not used to switching out every month. I had what I think was a temporary eye allergy/problem which caused lens discomfort in my right eye. I switched to monthly disposables. I still had the problem at first which caused my right lens to break after only 2 weeks (I kept taking it in and out, rubbing it). Then, I didn't have problems with my contacts at all. In fact, I just realized I've been wearing the same pair since November! my right one is just starting to get a flimsy, filmy appearance so I switched to a new one. But my left hasn't given me any probs, so am I to believe that it is ok to wear them this long? Like I said, I'm used to yearly's, so I do the daily rubbing and enzyming (when I remember). The contacts are so $$$, $80 for a 6 mon. supply. I'm tempted...

Make sure you change them often, and don't wear them for extended periods of time (sleeping, napping, 12 hours a day). My eye doctor has taken my off of wearing my contacts for an extended period of time due to my contact suffocating my eyes. Trust me, you do NOT want to go through this. Your eyes will go beat red, get very sore and irritated. If this is left untreated, it can lead to blindness. I wish someone informed me of this when I first started wearing contacts. Eventually I will be able to go back to wearing contacts, but they will be a special perscription to ensure my cornea is getting enough oxygen. I don't think I will ever go back to wearing my contacts as much as I used to. Just an FYI, so becareful.

As I understand, you should not go beyond a month because that's when build up really occurs. You are damaging your eyes. As I also understand you only have so much time to wear contacts. That's what an optician told me. I was wearing contacts for 16 hours a day. He told me that I could wear them less and have more years or continue to wear them for that many hours and have less years.

I was wearing my monthly contact's until they ripped and when I told my eye doctor, she almost didn't write me a new prescription. She got mad and said that it was very bad for my eyes. She said you should always follow the instructions because of the way the contacts are made. She told me that if you don't change them regularly you run the risk of going blind due to lack of oxygen getting to the cornea or something....so now I change them the first of every month...

your supposed to wear contacts for 2-3 weeks and then open a new pair (thats why they give you a lot of boxes)

Yes, it is not good to wear it for longer time. Do change ur lense every mnth.
