Does anti-glare coating on eye glasses make them get scratched more easily?!

Question: I have glasses with anti-glare, and (presumably/I think) anti-scratch coatings on them. They are a couple of years old and badly scratched. My eye-sight hasn't changed (I have just had an expensive eye-check) so I don't need new glasses. However I am tossing up whether to get new glasses anyway - I think I should, but I'm worried about how expensive it'll be. If I do then I really really want to know how to prevent the new glasses from getting (too) scratched. I think I look after the glasses I have well (wash in detergent/warm water, try not to rub them dry or clean etc) - I am not sure how the scratches were made.

If you've tried both anti-glare glasses and glasses without anti-glare coating, please let me know if you noticed a difference between them (more scratches or same).

What has probably happened to your lenses is something called " crazing"...it is the anti scratch coat that is cracking or peeling. It will look like they are badly scratched when that happens. An anti -reflection coating is never applied without an anti scratch coat by the way...so if you have anti reflection, there was an anti scratch done too.

It happens sometimes, even with the best of care. It isn't your fault, it is a defect in the coatings.

In my practice we guaranty against that for 2 years because most of the lens manufacturers do for us.. Check where you bought them, they may still be under warranty.

yes, they scratch easier. don't ever use paper towels or toilet paper to wipe them. paper = wood. remember that!

I only have a couple of scratches, but they are "bad" scratches. I don't associate them with the coatings, but with times they have been knocked. The trick is never to lay them "lens down" on any surface.
