I had an eye appointment today and my vision is 20/80. Is this really bad?!

Question: Is this really bad? 20/80 vision?

There are lots of different types of cameras. Some take pictures of things far away. Others take pictures of things close up, like a leaf or flower or ?. You have the close up kind.

For you to be able to see clearly at a distance, you'll need to place a lens in front of your camera (eye) that moves the focal point where you are focused out to distance. Then you'll see at distance well.

The 20/80 thing is a measure of the angle of vision. Most people see an item 1 degree tall. The letter E has 3 lines and two spaces. If each is 1 degree, then the whole thing will be 5 degrees high. At 20 feet, the size of that letter is a certain size. Further out, 5 degrees is larger. At 40 feet, it's twice as large as the letter at 20 feet. At 80 feet, it's 4 times larger than the one at 20 feet.

When a 'normal' person stands back 80 feet, he can see the 80 foot letter. YOU have to be at the 20 foot distance to see that same letter, so without your glasses, you can't see well as you're out of focus.

How out of focus? The power is equal to one over the distance in meters. If you were focused at a meter away, your eyes would be too 'strong' as you are focused close by. You'd be a +1.00 too strong. So you'd need a -1.00 to move that focal point out to infinity.

If you were focused at a half meter away, you'd be +2.00 too strong, need a -2.00 to move that focal point out.

Third of a meter, +3.00 to strong, need a -3.00.
Quarter of a meter, need a -4.00
Fifth of a meter, -5.00
Sixth of a meter, -6.00.

A 20/80 vision at distance, without correction isn't too bad, not really.

Considering that 20/20 is perfect vision then 20/80 means that you are almost blind.

I know, my vision is 20/100 and without my glasses I can't see anything clearly unless I hold it three inches to my face.

its not very good, i have 20/45 or 50, and an astigmatism(spelling??) i have a hard time seeing without my glasses, theres nothin to be worried about.

well its not awesome, but your not blind.so chill. my eyesight, is like, pretty bad so don't freak!

it all depends on your perception of bad. now to me 20/80 is not bad as mine is so bad it is off the charts. the last actual reading i got was 20/400 and that had to be 20 years ago. i wish mine was 20/80

Unfortunately you will have to surrender your drivers license and get a helper dog.
You must get somebody to help you see your way down to the Drs. office
But before you do that let me ask you a question. Was it 20/80 with your best eyeglass correction? Or was it 20/80 without lenses and 20/20 with lenses?
If it is 20/20 with glasses or contacts you may drive a little longer.
Please let us know.

Girl... get some glasses or turn your license in... 20/40 is the last line for legal driving... 20/80 well.... hopefully this is without correction... if you dont like glasses, get contacts... they dont hurt

Lets put it this way. It isn't good vision. 20/40 is about when they will prescribe glasses for you. It means you are seeing stuff at 20 feet away that you should be seeing at 80 feet away. Hope this helps you to understand it better.

You need vision of 20/70 in most states to be able to drive. 20/200 is legally blind, so you aren't there yet. You definitely aren't seeing as well as you think you are. Wear your glasses!
