Help! Besides having to wear glasses, what does 20-60 vision mean?!

Question: I have never worn glasses and yesterday went for an eye exam. I'm 50 years old and in what seems like a few short months, my vision has degenerated to 20-60. I'm going to fill my Rx this weekend and buy frames. I'm new at this and am afraid of going blind! Is 20-60 vision really bad?

First of all, is the 20/60 with or without glasses? If without glasses and glasses bring you to 20/20 then stop worrying.

No one has ever gone blind from needing glasses. Blind means seeing badly WITH GLASSES. Blindness results only from injury and disease, never from needing glasses.

I suspect the 20/60 is without glasses, otherwise your doctor would have told you the name of the eye disease you have. It is not very bad, you will need your glasses for driving and movies but will be able to do most other things without them.

20-60 vision means that you are a bit vision imparied. "If neither of your eyes can see better than 20/60 without improvement from glasses or contacts, you may be defined as visually impaired. Low vision is a term describing a level of vision below normal (20/70 or worse) that cannot be corrected with conventional glasses. If your vision is 20/60, that means what you can see at a distance of 20 feet, someone with perfect vision can see at a distance of 60 feet. "

Luckily, you are no where near blind. 20/200 is legally blind.

But no need to worry. Glasses arn't bad. Trust me.

It basically means what most people can see clearly at 60 feet, you need to be 20 feet from to see clearly. It's not bad, but it's not great. Being 50, did your doctor check you for cataracts, glaucoma or AMD( Age-related macular degeneration)? All of those things are common causes of vision loss for people over the age of 40.

20/200 in most places is what is considered legally blind. 20/60 basically means that what you can see clearly at a max of 20 feet away, someone with perfect vision can see it from 60 feet away. You're fine, but if your vision continues to get worse you should look into testing for conditions like macular degeneration.

There's nothing wrong with being blind though. Lots of people learn to live perfeclty normal lives. I myself am blind with my better eye at 20/400ish.

The standard vision for normal healthy eyes is 20/20, whenever it is worse, then you must find out why. If you got your eye exam at an optical they might not have check the health of your eyes, do you remember them putting drops in your eyes and shining a bright light at it? If not, then you should immediately go to an optometrist or ophthalmologist. At your age, cataracts are not too common, but it can be a variety of other diseases such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. I do not want to scare you but I need to stress the importance of getting a full exam to check the health of your eye and determine why you cannot see 20/20. If you would like some assurance, I am an optometry school student. Good luck.

All it means is that you need to stand 20 feet from things that a person with normal vision can see at 60 feet. It's not as big a deal as it sounds, and probably half the people you pass on the street have worse vision. Assuming it's just a refractive error it is probably due to the increased farsightedness common at your age. It may get a little worse but not much. Go back and ask if you are worried, that's what they are there for!
