Reason for becoming short sighted?!

Question: im 14 atm, and ive had 100% vision since i was 11.
I started using the computer alot when i was 12 and i had no problems until the start of this year when i went for a check-up he said i had become short sighted and idk how these numbers work but he said my eye sight was - minus 1.5
and when he told my mum she straight away jumped to the conclusion that its from the computer but then the optomistrist said that sometimes during puberty because of the growth spurt some people can become short sighted and that it will wear off.

Is this true, will i have 100% vision again?

i have glasses but i hardly wear maybe when im watching a movie or something from far away but thats about it.
Thanks.

Genetics plays a large role in your eyesight, if your parents need glasses you'll likely be a candidate. You don't have to be born with nearsightedness, it's likely that you've always had this condition but it was so slight that it wasn't worth glasses.

Overuse of the computer can cause eyestrain and there are correlations between computer and eyesight - however, this conclusion seems vague. When you are using your computer, you don't blink as often as you should. This dries out your eyes, so you should try to blink more often. Also, the brightness of your computer may also affect your eyes, so you might want to consider turning down the brightness levels on your computer.

It is likely that puberty affects your eyesight. Nearsightedness is essentially caused by your eyeball being too long or your cornea on too much of a slant. (Farsightedness means that your eyeball is too flat and your cornea isn't slanted enough).

It could wear off. I've found that my eyesight gradually deteriorated following puberty, then it plateaued.

You should wear your glasses to prevent eyestrain. You might find that, if you're not wearing your glasses, you end up with a headache right above your eyes.

Here's a wiki site so you can learn more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myopia

I wear glasses at the age of 6yrs. But growning up I didn't like wearing them. Now as an adult I only wear them when driving and working on computer. But I'm realizing as I'm getting older I'm needing them more. : ( I need to get some new ones cause the ones I use now are 11yrs old. There cracked, crooked.scratched lenses that pop out all the time. But they work and there red so that makes it all ok! Sad I know . But there my favorite color. : )

For got to add had I wore them all this time .I wouldn't need to wear them today. My site would have improved.Owell!

well no need to worry, unfortunately becoming myopic or shortsighted is sort of a shock at first but there are MANY others in your same shoes, myself included, most are far worse...

in terms of the cause, genetics plays a major role in it as does puberty, many people go short sighted strictly from genetics, HOWEVER there is growing evidence that prolonged near work such as (reading, computer use, etc) anything basically when your looking close up can cause and accelerate nearsightedness. Look at any University class room and just count the people wearing glasses compared to say someone who never really went to school and lived on a farm all there lives... vision is quite different

ive heard studies that show 90% of accountants wear glasses and 10% of farmers do... makes you wonder what the effect of all that close work is...

it doesn't mean to stop doing close work completely, it means take breaks, look into the distance often (your eyes are most relaxed when looking into the distance) and dont abuse the only set of eyes you have...

It is also important to note that prolonged close-work has never been fully accepted as a cause and many eyecare proffessionals don't buy the theory and there is a good chance they are right... I mean look at all the people that DO use the computer 8 hours a day and they still have perfect vision.. this shows genetics clearly plays a role...

also think about how much exercise your getting and what do you eat, you gotta keep healthy! its good for your eyes and body

P.S. with your prescription you may want to try not wearing your glasses when reading or being on the computer, its a lot easier on your eyes that way!

Cheers!

Unfortunately ,myopia(nearsightedness) is irreversible.
