Has anybody lost a job opportunity for being colorblind?!

Question: i was in a aerospace company trying to become an ndt inspector (non destructive testing) its inspecting airplane parts for cracks. well.. I was there for about a year and a half, I passed all of the practicals, written tests, they made me inspect cracked parts and show them where the cracks were.... the process is we spray the parts with a green flourescent chemical so the green chemical penetrates into the crack then we rinse the part off with water and we check them under black lights.. to see the green chemical in the crack...thats how we inspected parts...i was a helper the whole time i was there, i got the parts ready, i sprayed them with the green ****. And i never knew i was colorblind until the day they had my certificate ready to become an inspector, they sent me to the optometrist. and bamm I ended up being mild colorblind its hard for me to distinguish green and red.. so I didnt make it to become an inspector. thats my story.. just wondering if n e of u got stories also simi

Yes, I know a story about color blindness. (Anomalous color vision). This is a true story.
In former days when shooting the Western movies that used to be so popular, they would go out one day and shoot for a couple of hours and then go out the next day and shoot some more scenes.
When they got the film all shot, a funny thing would happen.
One day the shooting would be on an overcast day. A couple of days later the scenes were filmed in bright sunlight. You can't have a movie where the sky is bright and a moment later the sky is dim.
Movie studios had to balance the footage and adjust it for differences in brightness.
So one day at on of the big studios they were giving everybody physicals and checking their eyes and all that.
When the results were evaluated it turned out that Charlie, who had been working in the cutting room, was discovered to have anomalous color vision. Charlie saw mainly in different shades of gray.
So they said, "Charlie, you have been with us for a long time, but the tests show that you are color blind. We are going to have to put you on a job that takes less critical vision. You will not be able to work balancing the sky brightness in the films any more.
And Charlie said, "But I am the only one who can do it".
And indeed nobody had been able to do it as well as Charlie.
So they acknowleged that Charlie was the best, and he was able to continue on the job.
It seems that people with vision like Charlie's are more sensitive to shades of light and dark than people without anamalous color vision.
That was lucky for Charlie.
You may not see the green **** but at least you see the **** itself, can't you?

Just a question for you. Do you think it is possible that you could miss a crack in one of the parts solely because of your color blindness? Could that missed crack result in the failure of an aircraft?

If so, could you accept the possibly devastating result from that? Maybe that's why the certification requires that inspectors not have vision deficiencies including color blindness.

Makes sense to me, I was color tested for the phone company.

It's fairly unusual to already be in a career and then come across the colour vision requirement further up the path.

More often it's there in the entry requirements, and people with colour vision problems have to be steered away from those: many branches of the military forces, deck officers in the merchant marine, train driving...

Given that one in ten men have a mild defect, the level of the anomaly can make a differece to being accepted or excluded in some lines of work.

Yes i had the same problem when i was tested to become a sapper
