AT 16 should I get contacts...?or is it not nessecary? is it better than glasses!

Question: im 15 and i wore glasses since i was 9. Once i started high school, i tried contacts and i've been wearing them for 2 years now. i think i look better with contacts than with glasses. but i still do wear glasses, like at home when im not going anywhere and on the weekends and such.

i'd say you should try contacts to see if you like them. get a 1-month pair. keep your glasses though. and if you dont have either, i'd highly suggest getting both.

also, there are advantages to wearing contacts. in the summer you can wear sunglasses. and if you go to the pool, you can wear them and still see (that was a big thing for me). and glasses get dirty easily. especially when it rains it gets annoying having water drops on your glasses. and when playing sports, glasses sometimes get in the way and can get knocked off.
but also with contacts, you need to be careful you keep things clean or else you could get an infection. and contacts may make your eyes a little dry. i dont wear mine for more than 9 hours each day.

hope this helps :)

It's really up to you. There's nothing unsafe about contacts at your age, so if that's your preference, go for it. The only thing stopping you is if you don't like the way they feel or the trouble of maintaining them. Also, some people just can't wear them because their vision is too bad or contacts make their eyes too dry. But for a lot of people, they're more convenient than glasses, especially when you're physically active.

Go to the optometrist, try 'em out, see what you think.

Depends on if you're ready for the responsibility. I loved wearing contacts, and wanted them so badly I paid for them myself and cared for them impeccably at 13. If glasses don't bother you, then there's no reason to switch, but it does allow you a little more freedom playing sports, wearing sunglasses, better protection when driving, etc. Talk with your parents and your eye care professional, a lot of times they'll give you a few pairs to try out if you get a contact lens exam (it's a little different than for glasses). Also, you should ALWAYS have glasses no matter how long you wear contacts, because you always need a backup.

I've had contacts since I was in 8th grade. I love contact lenses wayy more than glasses!!! They dont smog and you can't even feel them!! You can play sports better if your on the go like me its a must. You have to remember there are alot of diffrent kinds of contacts like: the 1 day,2 weeks, 1 month and glass contacts.
I actually have and perfer the 1 month because you can keep them on for 1 month straight and then throw them away!! The most common one is the 2 weeks. The bad thing about that kind is that you have to take them off every night and clean them for like 8 hours and put them back on the next day.

I think it depends on what you are comfortable with and if you are involved in sports or exercising, they can be a great thing. No glasses slipping off your nose and you just can see better and no risk of them getting broke. They can be expensive though and and they aren't for everyone.

But if you go to your eye Dr. and talk to him/her , your Dr. can help you make the best decision that is right for you. There are a lot of choices, and you will want a trial pair first to see if they are comfortable. You may have to try several different kinds to find the right pair.

I didn't get them until I was 25, and I am almost 40 now. I don't wear them everyday because I prefer to wear them when I go out or when I am running or exercising. Other than that I wear my glasses. So I like having the choice of wearing either one, it's not a vanity thing for me. Just a comfort thing.

Good Luck!

Contacts today are better than in the past. The "disposable" kind are very convenient, but it's a constant expense, where eyeglasses usually don't need to be replaced for a couple of years, unless they're damaged. This might not matter to you at your age, unless you're buying them with your own money, but it may matter to your parents, if they're paying for it.

Are contacts "necessary?" Probably not, unless you're involved in a sport or activity where glasses would be a hazard. Contacts don't provide eye protection the way glasses do. Contacts also require more care than eyeglasses.

You'll need to have at least one pair of glasses anyway, in case you lose or damage your contacts (I like having at least a couple spares at all times).

When I get patients that are under 18 I ask the parent/guardian a few questions.

1. What's your grade point average/ or how are your grades doing?
2. Do you take care of your responsibilities around your house?

If you can't take care of your grades or "chores" around your house than you aren't able in my perspective to take care of contact lenses. They are not necessary to see. If I dont' feel you will take care of them then you will not be given the chance to wear contacts even if your parents say it's fine with them.

If you have a moderately high prescription then contact lenses will help out with the size of the image that your eyes see and will help with magnification differences between your eyes if they aren't roughly equal in power.
