Why do my eyes get tears when theres onions, ( sensitive eyes?)?!

Question: How come when my mom starts to chop onion, my eyes water very easily and burns so much? But, even my mom, who is chopping onions, doesnt feel the burn, and she's right in front of the onions, and my sister also doesnt feel anything and doest get tears. But i do. Is it because i have sensitive eyes? Also my mom thinks theres something wrong with my eyes, since we are chinese, and my eyes are very light brown compared to the rest of the family. And chinese people's eyes are suppose to be dark to be healthy. Is there something wrong with my eyes?

Is it also connect to my near- sightedness? Since, when the eye has far sighted or near sighted, i know that the eye stretches, so maybe is it cause i have a high near sighted degree which makes my cornea thinner, which makes my eye more sensitive?

My eyes are also very sensitive to light. When i walk outside i almost have to close my eyes when the sun is out.

thanks for helping.

Photosensitivity (sensitivity to light/sun) in lighter eyes is common. However the onions burning your eyes probably have less to do with the sensitivity than with the corrosive nature of onion fumes. Most people have the same reaction and few can tolerate it, so you are not alone. Try to stay out of the area when someone is chopping fresh onions. Also, I recommend wearing sun glasses outdoors in order to protect yor vision and avoid headaches.

the only thing i can say is wen you go outside, it takes a wile for your eyes to adjust, and they hurt. plus the onion this i think is sensitivity, im the same way, even bottled water makes my eyes burn.

Onions emit a gas that causes you to tear up. If you are cutting them a lot you become less sensitive to it. I cut onions almost everyday and have no problem but when I was younger they really bugged me. I would have to leave the room. I don't know if it has any thing to do with your eyes. Mine are bad also and it doesn't bother me now.
Your eyes are light probably due to a recessive gene. Are both your parents 100% Chinese? Or is there another race mixed up in your genes some where?
Lighter eyes are more sensitive to light. but sudden changes in light renders just about everyone almost blind for a few seconds to a few minutes.

when you cut up an onion, particles of the onion are released into the air. the particles have acids in them that make contact with your eyes. your natural defense is to make tears to wash it out. you may just have sensitive eyes, or it could be allergies that makes them more sensitive. if you really think there is something wrong with your eyes, see an eye doctor.
