Average cost of an eye doctor visit?!

Question: My eye doctor seem to keep going up and up and up on his yearly visit charges. Two weeks ago when I went his nurse (she is also a friend of mine) checked my 5 year old daughter's eyes and I now have an appointment for her. But I ended up paying $294 after my insurance paid for my visit and 1 years worth of contacts. OUCH! That is the most I have ever had to pay. I have family vision coverage but I am considering calling around to see what other providers charge for just a simple eye exam for a 5 year old. I know it is going to vary somewhat due to location but what do you get charged for an eye exam? (We are in VA, but our eye doc is in East TN)

Wal Mart Vision Centers are very affordable on eye exams and contact lens fittings or glasses fitting. Mine was $91 total, including the exam, contact lens fitting, one trial pair of contacts, and 2 4oz bottles of solution with a contact lens case. This was my price without vision insurance, so it'll most likely be even cheaper than that for you!

My local eye doctor wanted over $200 for the exact same thing, which is why I opted to go to Wal Mart instead.

About $50(no ins.) for a simple eye exam by an optometrist. An optometrist is all a normal 5 year old needs. They are trained to spot any type of problem that might need the attention of an opthalmologist. This in Texas.

$40.00 without an examine, it varies if it's a private practice it could be $60-75.00
places like Walmart starts at $40.00 but as you're traveling in your city start looking around and some times some places be having SPECIALS like first time examine $25.00 and two pair of glasses for only $99.00 etc...etc..

i have payed in walmart my eye exam for 50$!
they are robbing you!!!

I am the front desk supervisor for an Ophthalmology office. We have a price range of $72 to over $500 depending on what is wrong, what testing is necessary, etc. Typically, if you want only the basic eye exam, including dilation and refraction (the which is better, one or two test), it runs between $72 and $120. Now, if you have medical insurance, an Ophthalmology office can typically bill that instead of vision insurance. Sometimes, depending on your benefits, that can help with the cost of the appoinment.

What insurance do you have for vision? I would compare with the 2020Vision4Less plan, I've seen friends save hundreds on eye exams and contact with it. Search for locations both in TN and VA by zip code.
