Astigmatism?!

Question: My son has astigmatism & needs glasses. He is 5. so is everything he sees blurry or just everything far away? are you always either nearsided or farsided with astigmatism? they didnt say he was nearsided or farsided. Yes-I will ask-in the meantime Im just wondering how that works.

Astigmatism applies at all distances, is only a variant of short or long sight, and can be present in an eye that is predominantly farsighted, nearsighted, or is both near and far sighted. ("mixed astigmatism")

The cornea is NOT irregular or mis-shapen.
(there is specific term, "irregular astigmatism" to cover those rare instances where it is.)
It merely lacks the rotational symmetry of an eye whose prescription can be defined in one number, (-2.25 DS, say,)
where an astigmatic eye requires three. (-2.25 DS /-1.00DC ax 15, say)
The second number specifies the amount that the first number misses focussing the eye in one meridian, despite getting one meridian in focus, and the last number specifies which direction that is in degrees.

For example if the astigmatism was missing from an Rx, a person might see the horizontals of a letter E perfectly clearly, while the vertical stroke was still blurred.
Extra power is required, but only in one direction.

Because the cornea is an irregular shape, the eye can't focus light passing through it sharply on to the back of the eye or retina. So vision is blurred at all distances.

If he merely has an astigmatism, his vision is not sharp. It is actually a misshapen cornea, and it makes your eye process light funny, and reflect it on the retina in a different manner than someone without it. He can probably see fine, but not as clear as he should be seeing.

It isn't always accompanied with other vision problems. My 15 year old has astigmatism, but he isn't near or far sighted. He does where glasses to sharpen his vision.

To put it simply it just means he doesn't see as well as he should...

i m sorry that i dont really understand wat u re asking but im in 8th grade and have astigmatim in both eyes. i got my glasses in 3 grade though. and i wanted to get contacts this year so i got them. they showed me how to put them on but i couldnt. they were special contacts for people with astigmatism. its harder for me to put them in cause myeyes r so irrative

I have Astigmatism in both eyes and it means my vision is blurred for both short and long distances. I now wear glasses or contacts and can see very well.

In Astigmatic the lens is the wrong shape whereas for long or short sightedness it is the eye mussels focusing the lens which are too weak or strong.

Hope things are a little clearer now ( sorry for pun)!

Astigmatism manifest as blurred vision and seeing deformed objects , for examble when you are looking to a round moon it appears blurred and not round,it appears oval.Astigmatism can be farsightedness, nearsightedness or both.
