How can you get a 18 month old to keep his glasses on?!

Question: My cousin just got glasses due to lazy eye. He's 18 months old and a total bruiser. (as in he's all boy, gets into things and acts like a monkey.)
Anyway we all tried getting him to wear his glasses and he would tear them off right away. I guess later he threw a huge fit when his mom put them on him. He ended up breaking them already. (the first day)
Any ideas on how to get him to wear them?

(please no critisizim. And please dont be rude. someone asked me why I would I care because its not my kid.)

Awww! Whatta little guy! I have a 20 month old niece who no way would keep glasses on if she had to wear them!

Does the eye dr have any ideas? They have sport straps: elastic straps that keep glasses on your head amidst lots of activity, but a determined little boy could probably still get them off.

Are the glasses uncomfortable for him? Too heavy? Too tight? Best options would be polycarbonate lenses (lightweight AND impact resistant), with titanium/flexon frames: actually meant to bend: they're amazing!

Good luck!

Some people responding may not realize that it's important to correct amblyopia at an early age -- if not corrected, that eye CAN become pretty useless with very poor vision. We see grown adults fairly often in our office who can't see the biggest number on the eye chart with their amblyopic eye, because their parents didn't know to get that condition corrected when they were young. One good eye also affects your depth perception.

Get him contacts? LOL JK Idk??? Just dont let him get into things!

duct tape

seems like you need to use positive/negative reinforcement...

Positve=give something to him for being good
Negative=take something away for being GOOD (not bad)

Esamples:
If he wears the glasses for an hour, give him a treat, like McDonalds(yes, you must pull out the big guns). This would be Positive Reinforcement.

If he wears the glasses for an hour, take away something he doesnt like that he has to do daily (not sure what an 18 month old would have to do daily, but i assume you can think of something. This would be Negative Reinforcement.

I would suggest to read up on Positive/Negative reinforcement. It may be a little harder because he is so young, but if you find the right technique, it should work.

he's too yound fro glasses he should not get them untill he is old enough to tell the doctor if its the right perscription or not. also he is not 18 months old he is one year. and in four months he will be 2 years

A lot of doctors choose to use patches rather than glasses to correct amblyopia in very young kids. If he won't tolerate glasses, that may be an option. However, he'll likely want to peel those off and people will ask lots of questions about it too. Either way it's a difficult situation. Good Luck!
