It is the light of the flash shining on the retina, which is blood colored. If your camera has 'red eye reduction', it will shine a light first which causes your pupil to consrict, then the picture flashes, and the retina reflection isn't possible.

If you had a tumor in the eye, it wouldn't reflect red, but white, or various colors. Cataracts, or just having small pupils will prevent the red reflex also.

Due to the flash being too close to the lens.

Your question is common since it is usually confused with the coloration of the iris in the human eyes.

It's the flash.
People with lighter eyes have more of this problem. It has nothing to do with how healthy your retina is.

It's from the iris being open, and a strong reflection of light off the retina.

A pre-flash will cause the iris to close more, thus reducing the red-eye.

Another method for reducing red-eye is to move the flash. When the flash is close to the lens, the light will go direct through the lens of the eye, off the retina and back. Moving the flash away from the lens of the camer will reduce this. This is one reason that professional photographers use a flash that is held or mounted farther from the camera.

The red eye is not a problem. It is the natural effect of the flash reflecting off the red back of your retina.

However a bright white reflection can indicate serious problems (tumors) that are worth going to an ophthalmologist to get checked.

It's the reflection of flash light from the retina.Paediatric ophthalmolgists use it to know if the small child has refractive error, which type and how much.
