There are a couple of possibilities here. Your contact may be damaged. Check it really good for scratches, tears and nicks. This is most likely the cause. Sometimes we can get tiny scratches on our contacts that we can't see with the naked eye and they can be very irritating. Secondly, your contact my have protein build up on it. Most cleansing solutions have something in them to get rid of this, but if you use the same solution over and over and again, it still may occur. Third, you may have a teeny tiny scratch on your cornea that doesn't bother you when nothing's touching it. Usually with these though, it hurts when you close your eye. Try changing your left lens and see if the problem goes away, if it does, you know it's your contact, and if it doesn't, you know the problem lies within your eye. If the problem is in the eye, you may want to go to an ophthalmologist.

contacts can be really hand, and really annoying.
try checking if theres a small rip in one of them.
also make sure you put some solution on them, not water or vizene.
if it continues to hurt, go to to your eye doctor and get it checked out

you may have a damaged contact, or it is in backwards. My eye doctor told me they will sting and hurt when they are ripped or scratched and if they are in backwards.

to check if they are backwards, hold the contact up to the light and see if the cup part is curvy, or perfectly round. if it seems to have a wave or curve in it , it's probably backwards. its not backwards when it is perfectly round. =)
