Optometrists...I have a question about my vision.?!

Question: My prescription is -1.25 in both eyes. I have 20/70 corrected to 20/10. I want to join the air force but I'm worried that my vision is not good enough. I know a lot of people say that your vision doesn't improve but mine does. After the summer I measure 20/30 - 20/40.

My question is...would using plus lenses during near work be enough to prevent my vision from getting worse by eliminating near-point stress? I wouldn't buy the walmart lenses, I would see my optometrist and buy a properly prescribed pair. Could this harm my eyes if I tried it?

Is there anything else I could try? Thanks.

If you've not had it, you need a cycloplegic refraction
(with eye-drops stronger than the simple pupil-dilating ones)
to see if at least some of your short-sight is indeed due to muscle cramp (ciliary spasm) from closework.

In such cases appropriately powered +ve lenses for prolonged closework can sometimes be useful alongside exercises to improve the eyes' ability to refocus smoothly.

There's almost no chance of harming your eyes if you tried it.
(and the almost is only there because I'm a very cautious person.)

First of all, before worrying about this too much, check with the Air Force. Most of their postions, including pilots, only require good vision with glasses, they don't care about your uncorrected vision.

Uncorrected vision can vary depending upon pupil size, stress, fatigue and so on. With -1.25, I would expect your unaided acuity to vary from 20/40 to 20/100.

I think you may have been reading web posts by internet kooks who advocate using plus lenses at near to eliminate myopia. What they don't mention is that numerous scientific studies of using plus at near have been done and none have found that it is effective.
