Why are glasses for near sighted people so much more expensive than those for fa!

Question: seriously you can walk into any drug store or grocery store and pick up a pair of reading glasses for a few bucks, but in order to buy glasses for near-sighted people you're looking to spend $100 plus for just the frames.

and why is it that they don't sell over the counter glasses for near-sighted people, just for far-sighted?

Because near-sighted glasses require a certain perscription for the person, rather than just magnifying the image. I wear glasses as well as contacts and it would be too difficult to buy near-sighted glasses because my perscription is too strong, and too percise.

If you're willing to order over the internet, and therefore not able to try the frames on before ordering, you can order prescription eyeglasses very inexpensively over the internet. Most people who have done so have been pleased; most have reported that the lenses have been as good as when they paid hundreds more locally. You can spend as little as $8 for prescription eyewear!

The above site is independent, and contains links to various low cost eyeglass ordering sites on the net, as well as reviews by people who have used many of these low cost optical vendors.

Personally, I have purchased single vision eyeglasses from opticals4less.com (in Hong Kong) and was pleased. Great quality ringless/hingeless for around $80 (as opposed to $400 locally!)

The glasses you find in the drug stores are intended to be reading glasses; they are only made with the same strength lenses in each side and no astigmatism correction, so they don't work for every body. If you have a considerably different prescription in each eye, or a significant amount of astigmatism, they might not work for you. Normally, you don't wear reading glasses all day long, day after day, so if they are not an exact match for your eyes, it will not cause major eyestrain etc.

For people who are near sighted, usually, they need to wear their glasses all, or most, of the time and need a fairly precise correction if they want to avoid headaches, etc. hence the need for a proper eye exam and glasses made specifically for them.

For a store to try and stock all the possible combinations of lens strengths, frame types, etc, and hope the everage person could even pick out the best glasses for their degree of nearsightedness would be pretty unrealistic at best.
