I have them too. They come and go. Sometimes I get many in one day. I actually went to see a specialist before and he said that it could've been from allergies. But I just saw my regular eye doctor tuesday and he said that they aren't from allergies. He said that he thinks I've been having ocular migraines. Aka: vision migraines. Just so you know, my eyes are perfectly normal too. It's probably ocular migraines.

Here's a link if you want to read about it.

they might have examined if it is normal then dont bother.

I have had them (seeing stars) when my blood pressure spikes, when I sneeze or cough, or I shut my eyes tightly.

They are from nerve impulses sent to the part of the brain where vision happens.

They can be harmless but can indicate a problem (like mine with high blood pressure spikes or being hit on the head.)

ALSO--ANYONE SEEING FLASHES OF LIGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME SHOULD GET IT CHECKED IMMEDIATELY AS THIS CAN BE A SERIOUS EYE PROBLEM WHICH CAN USUALLY BE HELPED IF ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY (people with retinal detachments often complain of seeing flashes of light.)

I do know one person who saw a flash of light every time she gazed to the left--she was seen in our office and found to have a tiny piece of glitter stuck to the bridge of her nose.

You need a proper dilated exam by an ophthalmologist. Flashes could be from the vitreous causing traction on the retina. This stimulation of the retina is experienced as flashes of light or lightening streaks.
As we get older the vitreous becomes more liquified and tends to collapse down and try to detach from its normal attacment to the retina. This is fine if it detaches from the retina but not if it causes a tear in the retina. A tear in the retina can lead to fluid getting behind it and then peeling the retina off its wall (i.e. retinal detachment), a potentially blinding event.
Flashes can be other things too but you need a check by an ophthalmologist as a matter of urgency. If there is a hole in your retina there is simple treatment that can be done to save you a world of pain and trouble. Don't put it off.

Jason's answer is good. The urgency thing, since this has been a year isn't so urgent. If you were going to have a tear, you'd have one.

The one thing I'd add is that it might be a really good idea to see a retina specialist. It's not that the general ophthalmologist can't see these things, but, I've seen patients referred for possible tears and found 5 of them.
