Do I really need contacts AND glasses?!

Question: I have contacts and have worn them for about 3 years. I have a very old pair of glasses that I probably can't see out of, are very ugly, and I am not sure where they are. I know that many of my friends have glasses that they wear when they take out their contacts, is this really necessary. My eye doctor gave me a perscription for some glasses and recommended that I get some but is it really necessary? I can't see without them very well but I wear them from when I get up around 6 to 11 or 12 when I go to bed. Im not sure why I would need them but I would like another opinion on whether or not to get some. Thanks!

What if you were to contract an eye infection and were unable to wear your contacts? Then what? When you wear contact lenses, infection is a very real possibility, especially for people who overwear them and you need to have a set of glasses to wear in case you cannot wear your contacts. You should give your eyes a break, at least a few days a month, where you go a whole day (I know; perish the thought) without wearing your contacts at all. Its far healthier for your eyes to do that every so often so that they get a break and get a chance to breathe.

Also, what if you lost your contacts and had nothing to wear? Would you be caught dead in public with your very old, less-than-fashionable, and out-of-date prescription glasses? You might not mind wearing your glasses more often if they weren't so hideous, AND you could see out of them.

ALL CONTACT LENS WEARERS SHOULD HAVE A DECENT PAIR OF GLASSES TO WEAR - period. Maybe you don't have the lenses updated every year, but at least every other year. You just never know and you shouldn't rely 100% on your contacts because infection happens, and they get lost or torn and most people aren't as prepared with back-up sets and such as they should be. Especially people who can't see 2 feet in front of their face without their contacts. Heaven forbid they should come down with GPC (Giant Papillary Conjuncitivitis) and have to go several weeks and sometimes months, without wearing contacts in order for it to heal. Boy, they'd be up sh!t's creek without a paddle, huh? Oh, that's right...then its the opticians who have to drop everything and hurry up and get glasses made for them because now its an emergency. This is one of my pet peeves. Can you tell?

It just cracks me up how people just never seem to think beyond 5 minutes in the future. "Well, I wear my contacts for 18 hours a day, and I've never had a problem, why do I need glasses?" Just because you haven't had a problem, doesn't mean you won't in the future. You should change your mentality to..."I haven't had a problem thus far, but just in case, I should get a pair..." Even if its an inexpensive pair.

GET SOME GLASSES!!!!

in case you lose your contacts, or forget them somewhere
other than that it's a personal prefrance

I mostly wear contacts but always keep my eyeglass Rx up to date.
I wear glasses when I want a break from contacts (eyes are too dry, etc.).
I'll also keep glasses in the car, in case I have some kind of contact failure and need to see when I'm driving!

You know I think it would be a smart thing to keep your glasses just in case something happens to your contacts.

Know a couple of people who have contacts and glasses but never wear them together , have you ever considered having op? Work colleague had it done in summer and results excellent and not too expensive considering the money you save over the years not having to buy contacts and glasses

Um, some people just wear their glasses because they took the contacts out or don't feel like wearing them for one reason or another, but they still need to see...

If you take the contacts out or loose them, do you still wish to be able to see? If yes, then the glasses are a good idea to have.

Ask yourself this question: Does my car really need four tires AND a spare tire?

If you were to experience an acute condition, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) or severe allergies, that prevented you from wearing your contact lenses for a few days or a few weeks, would you want to have some form of vision correction? If your answer is yes, then you absolutely need contacts AND glasses as a back-up. If the blurred vision wouldn't bother you, then you don't need glasses. Just keep your fingers crossed that no emergencies occur.

depends on the strength of the lenses (contacts or glasses) that you need - you say you can't see very well without them so they're probably rather strong - but if you carry a spare pair of contacts with you at all times, you don't need the spare pair of glasses. Basically it's just like the spare tire in a car - you don't really need that unless for some reason a tire goes flat. In your case, you wouldn't need the glasses per s
