Eye irritated by contacts!?!

Question: I wear soft-lens contacts every day. 2 days ago, I noticed a little bit of mucus floating in my eye, and I took my contacts out and slept. The next day my eye (my left one, not that it matters, but...) was a little pink. My vision is bad: -8.00 in the left and -7.00 on the right- and my glasses are simply not strong enough: I had to put my contacts in.
Today my left eye is extremely sensitive to light... I get an intense urge to close both eyes... This is proving very dangerous as I am afraid I might lose sight while driving.
I know it is an irritation of some sort, but my health insurance does not cover optical. Is there anyone out there who has had a similar reaction to light?
You know how when you sneeze, your body forces you to shut your eyes, that is how it feels. I can't control it. Then my eye waters. It does not itch.

Photophobia is a common reaction in an eye having trouble.

A scratch, a bacterial or viral infection, or an allergy, affecting the cornea, will all tend to produce sensitivity to light.
As will iritis from deeper in the eye.

The eye will be slow to heal while contacts are still being worn, and be more likely to get worse.
This is one reason why viable back-up glasses are so important.

If not better within 2-3 days, or inside that if worsening, it needs a medical opinon.
It's difficult to recommend medication without seeing the eye to pin-down the exact cause.
Sticky mucus tends to indicate a bacterial infection, a watery eye a viral infection or a scratch/foreign body.

How long have you been wearing that pair. Did you know that disposable contacts disintegrate after time. They are recommended to be worn for only one week. What brand is it that you have?

does it itch and burn? it may be pink eye. I used to use contacts and sometimes would get irritations like that, but never to the point that you describe. The only thing you can probably do is leave them out for a while, or see a doctor, I know your ins doesnt cover, but trust me when it comes to your eyes....it's priceless.
